My most obvious experience of this year in 365 Days…Expect a Miracle* is experiencing relief, not just any kind of relief, but really profound relief.

And isn’t that what we are all after?

So many of us are hiding behind a mask.  A mask of protection, fear, loneliness, despair , heartache and even anger.  We all want relief.  Relief is going to give you a sense of openness.  It will free your soul so you can live and be your authentic self.

In the beginning of this journey, I compared the sense of relief to that of giving birth.  The physical relief that happens when a baby is born is beyond words.  9 months and  50 lb. later, along with a watermelon in my belly, not being able to sleep comfortably, peeing all the time, etc.  The physical demands I endured, along with millions of women, felt very long and often exhausting.

When the baby came for me (and understand that I was 3 weeks past due date for my oldest, so I carried 43 weeks!) the amount of relief I felt was huge.  Using this analogy for my mental wellness was very beneficial.  So many of us are carrying a lifetime of shame, guilt, anger and fear.  This is not enjoyable.  Pleasing others to avoid conflict or continually putting others first so we can avoid our needs or dismiss them, is a dark rabbit hole to live in.  When I began walking with courage and doing what someone who loves themselves would do, the relief that came after, completely outweighed the fear.  Practicing this all day long creates an enormous and healthy inner wellness atmosphere.

As we close out another year, let’s bring into the new year a desire for relief.  Lots and lots of relief.  In fact, start telling your brain to start looking for relief.  Let that be the carrot dangling in front of you while walking with courage on one side of you and faith on the other side. Let’s float into the new year on a magic carpet named relief.  It’s a ‘feel good’ kind of thing.  One that makes you actually look for more.

Begin now asking “What would someone who loves themselves do?” and do whatever you hear.   Allow the emotions to surface as you do it.  Allow the pain to bubble up and boil over so you can free yourself of it.  It no longer serves you.  You have permission to walk a new path in 2014.  And experience profound relief.  I know I am.  Who wants to join me?  Who is ready to say yes?  Yes to relief.  And watch the magic unfold.

If you haven’t heard yet, Brene Brown is doing part 1 of The gifts of Imperfections again, starting January 12.  Say yes to it.   She will continue into Part 2 at the end of March.  Allow yourself to find a new way of handling the shame, the fear, the anger and the guilt.  You have everything to gain so you can lose everything you don’t need anymore.  This frees you up to live the life you were always meant to live.
